I often get asked how I stay so positive and even-keeled in this crazy world with so many different things constantly bringing us down (Have you watched the news lately? If so, you know what I'm talking about...and here's a tip...STOP! Your personal peace is WAY more important than being inundated with images of violence and brutality for the sake of being "informed"). Our world is GO-GO-GO all the time, and everything is literally at our fingertips, so lots of us have developed this need to constantly be stimulated. We'll get lost in the newsfeed, trending stories, or latest celebrity gossip and hours have passed before we realize it, yet the thought of sitting still and truly doing nothing (you mean putting down my phone?!?!) seems like torture and many people will say they can't do it before they even start...Do you know where I'm going with this? You've probably guessed it, and your insides are probably already cringing and trying to close this browser asap, but please hear me out. I'm talking about meditation!
So here's the deal, meditation is not some weird brain trick for hippies that's gonna make you crave granola and stop wearing shoes. It really is just taking time to slow down, breathe, and allow your thoughts to clear. You don't have to sit cross legged (though I enjoy sitting that way...It makes me feel like an official spiritual gangster). You can just sit in a quiet room with light instrumental music playing or listening to a youtube guided meditation (My favorite one is here!). I'm not going to get into how to do it, because there are way more knowledgeable peeps than myself who have generated this info for free on the internet (like here!). What I want to do is URGE you to DO it. Just set aside the time. So many people say they can't or don't want to, yet they spend their lives frazzled and in need of serious inner peace. If that sounds like you, stop the bullshit, and set aside 5 minutes (everyone has 5 minutes...yes, everyone) to take care of yourself. The benefits of meditation are countless; from decreasing stress to increasing mental focus and even boosting your immune system! My favorite benefit is just truly understanding that I can control my thoughts. It reminds me that I have the power to choose peace at any time, rather than just letting the world happen to me and me reacting. So many times in our lives we have things pop up continuously and still dismiss them. I'm asking you to listen to the universe. If this isn't the first time you've had meditation suggested to you, that's no coincidence. Follow where you are being guided instead of saying "Yeah, I need to try that..." and never getting around to it. If you give it a serious shot (like, more than once or twice) and it's not for you, then cool. But I wouldn't be wasting my time, holding my pee while I finish this blog post if I didn't believe in it. Give it a try! You literally have nothing to lose and so much peace to gain.
