One of the BIGGEST struggles I had when I was starting my healthy lifestyle was limiting my soda. I used to LOVE it. I still do! But as I started learning about clean eating and all of the crazy shit that we put into our bodies without thinking twice, I started to realize that in order to lose weight, and more importantly, get healthy, I had to at least cut back.
Now I know someone is gonna say, "Hey, I've seen your pictures...You're a fit chick! I don't have the willpower you do." Or "Yeah right, I bet you only had like one soda a week." Let me give you a little background if you don't already know me through social media or my blog. I am a food addict. I am obsessed with it, and if there is even an inch of leeway in me making an unhealthy choice, I will do it. I struggle with my food issues every single day, and I am extremely PROUD of this change I have made because for me, it's a big fucking deal. For years, I legit GUZZLED soda. In college at West Virginia University, we had an amazing spot called "The Den." Total all purpose store. You could rent videos, make copies, buy bongs and dildos, and get standard college kid snacks. It was glorious. But the biggest reason I went in there (no, not the dildos) was the FOUNTAIN SODAS!!! They had...wait for it...$.42 32oz fountain sodas. FORTY TWO FREAKING CENTS! You bet your ASS I had one of those babies almost every single day. After college, without access to this amazing deal, I would have at least 2 cans of soda daily, and when going to a restaurant, I would take at least three refills of the good stuff. I tried diet sodas for a while, but they always tasted like poison to me. Oddly enough, years later when I started doing research on the ingredients, I decided it really was!
Anyhoots, back to my clean eating epiphany and desire to kick my soda addiction. First, I focused on upping my water consumption. I aimed for 90 ounces every day (which at the time was almost half of my body weight in ounces. Yes, I was 190lbs at the time). I knew I had to start somewhere, so I stopped buying 2 liters and 12 packs of soda at the store. I decided I'd buy those little cans...You know, the super cute ones that are like 8 ounces? I allowed myself one a day. That made me feel good because I knew at least I was cutting back. After a while, I decided to hide them in the pantry instead of in the fridge, so I'd have to really want one and purposely put it in the fridge beforehand to get it cold if I wanted to drink it. I was able to cut back a little this way too, and before I knew it I wasn't having one every single day! I did miss my bubbles though, so when someone in my online support group told me about sparkling water (soda water, club soda...all the same, just make sure it has nothing in it BUT water and carbonation), I decided it was worth a shot! I started to buy cans of that instead of the little sodas. I had to put a shit ton of limes in it (I should mention my alcoholic drink of choice at the time was homemade, fresh margaritas, so we always had limes aplenty), but it really satisfied my need for bubbly goodness. I was able to cut down on sodas unless I was out at a restaurant. Fast forward and nowadays that's pretty much the only time I treat myself! I have soda on date night once a week, and sometimes even then I'll opt for club soda or regular water. LOOK AT ME, DRINKING JUST REGULAR WATER AND SHIT!
I know this all seems well and good, and I know you're thinking you can't do it. But I promise, if you want to, you really can! Soda is freaking awful for us, and you know it. Yes, I still drink it from time to time, and I probably always will, but I am psyched and proud of the fact that I've kicked my soda addiction and now have it as a TREAT instead of a daily habit. I've been there in saying "It's one of the only bad things I do, so I don't want to give it up." It was bullshit for me and it's probably bullshit for you. If you were at peace with your health and fitness, there's a good chance you wouldn't still be reading this post. If you're happy where you are and aren't concerned about your soda intake, sip away! Seriously! I'm not here to judge. But I AM here to inspire women who think they CAN'T make a change. So for those ladies, you CAN do it! It is POSSIBLE! I am telling you, if you really want it, you can DO it. You just have to start, and one day you'll look back just like I do and be amazed at how far you've come and how much better you feel. There are people who kick habits every single day, and if you want this (or need it), then you have to just decide to do it. And if you need help, I'm here.
